The fourth annual Atlantis Music Prize longlist for the best Newfoundland album of the year is here.
The Atlantis Music Prize is Newfoundland and Labrador’s juried critic’s prize for recorded music. Modelled on the Canada-wide Polaris Prize, The Atlantis Prize awards $1,000 cash to the band that released the best album of the past year, as selected by a jury of journalists, bloggers, radio hosts, unaffiliated musicians and other known lovers of local music. The winner is selected entirely on the artistic merit of the album, regardless of sales, popularity, or genre.
The long list was selected by a preliminary jury of thirty-two people. They’ll vote again in a second round to whittle the roster down to a shortlist of ten. A grand jury will then be selected to choose the winner.
There are no entry fees or obligations to any organization to qualify for the Atlantis. Any album recorded in the past year by a band or artist from Newfoundland that was available for sale or download by the general public qualified.
The shortlist will be announced on November 30th, and the winner will be announced at The Scope’s Atlantis/Best of St. John’s party on December 15th.
